I Tried Out for American Gladiators!

galdiators.jpg  After waiting a total of 9 1/2 hrs (the first 2 in the freezing cold), I finally got my chance to audition for American Gladiators and I kicked ass!!

I am so proud of myself, not only for going through with it, but doing really well.  American Gladiators held an open casting call at the Student Rec Center at CU in Boulder on Sat.  The audition was from 10am-4pm.  They said to start lining up two hrs early, but no earlier.  I got almost no sleep on Friday because I was soooo excited. I got up at 5:30am to shower, eat a breakfast of champions, and go.  Brett (my new boyfriend) and I went and met my trainer and his friend.  When we got there, there was a few hundred people already in line.  The line went down the length of the building, around the corner, down the path into the parking lot and down my Folsom field.  They estimate approx. 1,000 people came out.  I was # 350 to get my shot.

The first two hours we waited outside in the freezing cold.  We were all trying to figure out where the line went, where we’d warm up, and what was going on in there.  Everyone vying for a spot had to fill out and bring a 28 page application and bring a picture.  After about 5 1/2 hrs I finally made it into the gym.  the line still wrapped around the track then down the stairs to the gym floor.  But it was cool to get in and see what I was up against.  But I was a little surprised.  I didn’t think they would set up the Eliminator or anything, but you couldn’t tell it was even a Gladiator audition.  It looked like a basketball camp.  I would say the guy to girl ratio was 5:1 if not more.  The girls I saw going through the physical test weren’t that great.  I was definitely ahead of the curve.

Once you got through the line you turned in your application and was given a number.  Then you go over to the wall with an American Gladiators banner (which was the only signage at all) on the wall and hold up a plaque with your name and the date on it while they take another pic.  Then you wait til they call your number and go through the physical test.

The physical test while short, was intense.  It doesn’t sound hard, but EVERYONE was dead tired at the end.  Even some of the biggest, badest dudes were passing out or puking.  1st stop- Pull ups, the most you can do in 30 seconds, 2nd stop- Up/Downs (also known as Burpee’s), the most you can do in 30 seconds, then criss cross 2 lengths of an agility ladder.  3rd stop- 10 shuttle runs, down and back counted as 1.  Last- you had a brief interview with a casting director.

There was no warm up area!  You just had to do what you could in line.  There were a few oliptical machines on the track by the line.  When I was getting close, I took advantage and warmed up on one, did some abs, and some push ups.  I wish I could’ve done more.  The thing is I’ve been in line for 9 1/2 hrs, I brought bars and shakes, but still wasn’t in the condition I wanted to be in.

Pull ups are my weakness.  I was able to crank out 4.  I know that sucks, but most girls couldn’t do any and the most I saw done was 10.  I was shocked I didn’t see some super buff chick jump up and rock some out.  Even the most built chicks couldn’t do that many.  I don’t know how many up-downs I did, but the dude said I had great form… which is most of what they were judging on.  I did the agility ladder perfect.  I thought I’d do better at the shuttle run, but still did better than most.  So all in all I feel pretty good about the physical test.  I can’t count the people I saw puking or passing out at the end.  It’s funny seeing these huge meatheads sucking wind and later laying down with ice packs on their backs or with their feet elevated.  They lift all the time and think they’re in great shape, but have no endurance whatsoever.  What’s up now, suckahs??

Then on to the interview.  The dude that lined us up, said forget about all that physical stuff we just did, the interview is 80% of the audition.  Mine was longer than most and the chick said I had a great interview.  Call backs are Sunday and Monday.  So if I don’t get a call by Tues. I didn’t make it.

Regardless if I get a call back or not, I am so proud that I went, and did it, and finished and feel good about my performance.  I love American Gladiators!!  See more pictures on the website on the Jesse & Shotgun page at www.925thewolf.com. Video to come!!

  • You Rock! Good job just getting out there!

  • So, I was #346 there. I was in the group of crazy kids right in front of you. The short brown haired kid with the black and red coat. Not that you’d really remember, but the whole time I thought you looked so familiar and couldn’t place you. Good job with the try-out!

  • I’m trying out at the open call in LA this Sat (16th) so thank you for the insight. I was hoping I could find out what the tests were, and you provided all of that!!! I too was in love with the show as a little girl, so now is my chance! Thanks!
